Sunset Sessions Series – Project Rhythm Seed’s Michael Halloran interviews One eskimO

Produced by Myles Crawley. Edited by Rich Aquino.

    By: Myles Crawley

Around our house we have certain things that we do religiously. They’re usually not very complicated, but they’re always an important ingredient to maintaining harmony, balance and happiness about the place. For instance, the preparation of dinner. If we’re all in town, dinner for us is like going to church. Both my wife and I will create culinary delights for no one in particular. Just us and the kids, and the occasional stranger or band passing through town. An integral ingredient to the finer balance, between the smells and the tastes, is the music. Our mixes and music selections have become nearly legendary amongst our friends. And it is this aural mix that adds the pizzazz to whatever delicacies we’re offering up that particular night.

Sunset Sessions Series – Josiah Leming

Hosted by Michael Halloran. Produced by Myles Crawley. Interview edited by Rich Aquino. Performance edited by Ryan Parker.

    By: Myles Crawley

Well, today’s the day I have been savoring for some time. While we were at Sunset Sessions we met a guy named Josiah Leming. Like Megan Corkrey, Josiah was flying under the radar. He wasn’t performing at Sunset Sessions. He wasn’t really supposed to be there at all. He had been brought down to Rancho Bernardo by Perry Watts-Russell and Julie Muncy from Warner/Reprise Records. Like Megan, Josiah was on American Idol. I think he made it to #20 or something.

Album Review – Marling Shines on “I Speak Because I Can”

    By: J. Brown

“I will come back here, bring me back when I’m old, / I want to lay here forever in the cold.
I might be cold but I’m just skin and bones, / And I never love England more than when covered in snow.” —Excerpt from “Goodbye England

Not of Cities, but of the World

    By: Adam Mekrut

With the internet, the idea of the band has evolved.  From non-consensual remixes to sending beats over the net to rappers, people come together for projects and disperse back into their own worlds after creating new ones, but how deep are these relationships that have been created?  The question is not how much collaboration has come from the internet, but how much inspiration is spawned and how much mutual creativity is being explored.

Prepare For An “April Uprising” From The John Butler Trio

Multi-platinum Australian guitarist/songwriter John Butler returns with his first album in three years, April Uprising, on April 6, the follow-up to 2007’s critically acclaimed and globally successful release, Grand National. The album finds Butler with a new line-up and a new label in the States, ATO Records. The John Butler Trio delivers a sophisticated mix of guitar stylings, hip hop beats and intelligent, socially conscious lyrics on these 15 original tracks; the songs are rhythmically complex and melodically immediate, charged with new purpose but more committed than ever to the principles of classic songcraft.

One for the Team: Reborn as “Ghosts” and Delivering an Exclusive Performance

Article by Ryan Mulligan. Photos and Video by Christian Heilman.

“Why are you so hard to find?”

This question, directed inward as much as towards a lost love, fuels the disjointed synergy that somehow coalesces in the narrative of Ghosts, the new album from Minneapolis’ One for the Team, released on March 16th on Afternoon Records. Ceaselessly shifting lyrical perspectives, songwriter Ian Anderson draws a parallel between being in and out of love and being in and out of life. Each one of these ten songs finds the singer struggling with what was, while attempting to discover what can be; a journey that the empathic listener is compelled to embark upon to the extent that they too can experience a potential catharsis of self-discovery.

Sunset Sessions Series – Halloran chats up Megan Corkrey

Hosted by Michael Halloran. Produced by Myles Crawley. Edited by Charlie Hatley.

    By: Myles Crawley

Megan Corkrey, or Megan Joy as she’s also known, wasn’t officially appearing at Sunset Sessions. She was kind of flying under the radar. Well, as much as a 6 foot tall girl with a blonde afro could anyway. Earlier in the day, Julie Muncy from Warner Bros. Records had come by and asked if we would be interested in interviewing Megan. Not being one to ever say no to a record exec, I said sure, absolutely.

Album Review – Horse Feathers’ “Thistled Spring”

    By: J. Brown

In a fast-paced world that hardly seems to value reflection, humility, and sincerity, the music from the band Horse Feathers seems to be on an island of its own and away from the noise and demands systemic of modern life. And upon listening to their music, the beautiful instrumentation and hushed vocals simply evoke silence in their listener and render nostalgia for a different time or even peaceful seclusion from a busy and hectic world. If you have not heard Horse Feathers, their sound manages to be simultaneously rustic and contemporary in its take on folk, instrumentals, and Americana music. Comparisons can be made to Bon Iver, Iron & Wine, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy.

Album Review – Kong’s “Snake Magnet”

    By: Lukas Clark-Memler

What’s the aural version of a punch delivered straight to the face? The auditory equivalent of a shock to the system? The answer is simple; one word, one syllable.

    Kong.

Before we start, a word of caution. This album is certainly not for the faint hearted.

Manchester based prog-rockers, Kong, don’t give a fuck about making their listeners feel good. In fact, their abrasive, raucous, atonal beats tend to leave you devoid of any feeling at all; you’re simply numbed by the sonic blow.

Sunset Sessions Series – Landon Pigg

Hosted by Michael Halloran. Produced by Myles Crawley. Edited by Jason Lehr.

Every once in a while we meet someone who makes an enormous positive impression on us. Landon Pigg is that type of person. When we arrived at Sunset Sessions we had no idea who he even was. But meeting him, and watching him effortlessly sing and play, changed that. Landon was polite, intelligent and well spoken, with no trace of an overblown ego.

In The Immortal Words Of Monty Python – “And Now For Something Completely Different” – Introducing Pomplamoose

    By: Daniel Ucko

In a land of constant pop culture re-hash, Pomplamoose stands apart from the usual viral video stars splattered all over the Internet.

The couple, Nataly Dawn and Jack Conte, have been making “videosongs” together on YouTube since 2008.

I just discovered them on Current.com and I can’t get enough of their sweet, pop-funk-jazz medlies, most of which are covers of famous songs.

Sunset Sessions Series – Halloran Speaks With Singer/Songwriter Maia Sharp

Hosted by Michael Halloran. Produced by Myles Crawley. Edited by Rich Aquino

Maia Sharp is a perfect example of why musical education is so important. In Maia’s case, she not only got it at school, but also at home. Both Maia’s parents are musically inclined and made sure that music was a big part of their home life. So it should come as no surprise that Maia has gone on to write songs for The Dixie Chicks, Art Garfunkel and Trisha Yearwood. She also toured with Bonnie Raitt for several years. Her new album, “Echo” is available now.
