Album Review – Male Bonding “Nothing Hurts”

admin

By Lukas Clark-Memler

Lo-fi is an extremely ambiguous word. By definition lo-fi is “music in which the sound is of a lower quality than the usual standard.” But as of late the term lo-fi has come to mean a whole lot more. It all comes down to authenticity. Free from studio sheen and basically any production whatsoever, lo-fi is considered by some to be the most genuine and pure music – and about as un-mainstream as it gets.

Album Review – Wolf Parade’s “Expo 86″

admin

By Lukas Clark-Memler

The 1986 Vancouver World Expo was a magical time. Miles Davis, Johnny Cash and The Beach Boys performed; a Floating McDonalds and the world’s largest ice hockey stick were all on display. This attracted a bevy of global icons including, but not limited to: Princess Diana, Bill Cosby and Jacques Cousteau. Another group of attendees were the then pre-adolescent members of Wolf Parade, who as rumor has it, actually met at the Expo and agreed to meet up some 17 years later to form a band.

Album Review: Foals ‘Total Life Forever’

admin

By Lukas Clark-Memler

Occasionally a song will come along that is so sonically flawless, that short of the artists responsible declaring their forthright love for Hitler’s policies, committing mass murder, or worse, selling their music to Starbucks – you will forgive them for almost anything. “Spanish Sahara” is such a single. Foals are such a group

And Foals’ sophomore album, Total Life Forever, is a damn good listen.

Gig Review: The Silent Comedy, The Middle East, and Mumford & Sons at the Belly Up

admin

By J. Brown

Sunday Night at the Belly Up in Solana Beach was a sold out show and for good reason: the night did not disappoint. The energy in the venue was palpable, undoubtedly due to the headliner Mumford & Sons, but the opening acts got the night off to a good start. “The Silent Comedy,” natives of Southern California, opened the show and the crowd loved the high energy, charisma, and style of this rocking band. While their appearance is decidedly old-fashioned, their performance at the Belly Up showed an effortless mix of styles and sounds often with loud, foot-stomping choruses that were made all the better by their lively stage presence. Simply put, their songs were fresh, fun and creative and had the crowd pumped up in no time. They have a new album out that can be purchased on their web site.

Miike Snow Unveil New Video For ‘The Rabbit’

admin

A large portion of the people involved in the “creative” side of the music business spend their entire career dedicated to the singular goal of recognition, specifically the type that gets you recognized – be it magazine covers, billboards, TV, etc. In a culture obsessed with becoming famous, what do we make of artists who chose to remain anonymous? Or, for that matter, use a jackalope as their visual representative? This brings us to Miike Snow. Up to this point they’ve remained pretty mysterious, proving nearly impossible to find any information about, photographic or otherwise. Man? DJ? Robot? Miike Snow is a band. Swedish duo Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg are childhood friends who spent time playing in bands and working on various projects in studios throughout Gothenburg.
