Ry Cuming. What a cool guy. When he showed up for his interview, he and I had a chance to talk. I sensed a very peaceful and ancient soul. He didn’t have the pretenses and trappings of Hollywood, even though that’s where he lives now. The thing that struck me the most about Ry was that he wasn’t trying hard to make it when he made it. I mean he was sitting in an alley outside a hotel in Costa Rica, busking for a little quick cash to keep surfing, when he met a producer from Hollywood that flew him to the US and changed his life. How cool is that? He wasn’t trying to make this happen. It just happened!
I meet so many people that spend their lives carefully and meticulously crafting themselves for fame and fortune. Some of my best mates are guilty of it (sorry fellas). But not Ry. I think if it all ended tomorrow, he would pack up his guitar and surfboard and go and live on a beach somewhere for the rest of his life, in total happiness and in harmony with nature.
From a musical standpoint, Ry is the genuine article. He sings with soul. I mean he’s a white guy from Australia, but he’s got so much soul in his approach to music that you undeniably feel it. He kind of disappears, deep within himself, when he sings and plays. He reminded me a bit of Neil Finn although he approaches his craft in a very unique way. I can understand why the clothing companies like Quiksilver and Roxy are all over him. He has a raw sex appeal that women are very attracted to. I say this because I watched two females, driving a golf cart, come cruising by us and nearly run over Ry’s manager. After he finished his interview, he stuck around and played a song. Both videos are below. Enjoy them, then go and buy his album.
