Young Songsmiths Work with Artists to Create “Chickens in Love” Benefit Project
by: Ryan Mulligan
826LA (http://www.826la.org), a non-profit, tutoring organization dedicated to nurturing creative and expository writing skills in children and young adults, has succeeded in giving voice to their students’ creativity with an inspiring project that merges lyrics derived from the imagination of students from the ages of seven to thirteen with the musical vision of LA indie pop band The Submarines. “Songwriting with the Submarines,” a music composition workshop in which the pop duo helped students craft original songs, saw the children develop their own bands, with such tremendous names as Pig Power, The Weirdoz and Jennifer Lopez. The resulting songwriting efforts have since been covered by such diverse artists as Fiona Apple (who is also a member of 826LA’s advisory board), She & Him, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, Cold War Kids and many more.
This unique convergence of creativity will result not only in a full-length album, due out April 20th, but which can be pre-ordered now at http://www.826la.org/chickensinlove/tickets-merch/, with all proceeds aimed at insuring that all similar programs for LA youth remain free, but also a one-day, mini music festival on March 6th from 1 to 7pm at the Echoplex on Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles. Among those already confirmed to be performing at the event include the aforementioned Submarines, along with Summer Darling, The Growlers and The Happy Hollows, all of whom have likewise contributed performances to the benefit album. Also available for purchase is the official Chickens in Love concert/album t-shirt and a limited edition poster.
If you’re not content with the mere thought of listening to songs sprouted from the collective imagination of children and musicians, be sure to visit http://www.826la.org/chickensinlove/pledge-now/, where you can watch several videos of the artists performing with the students who helped bring these songs into being. Through a pledge-drive to benefit the 826LA project, and for a minimum of just one dollar per vote, you can choose your favorite collaborative effort, with the winning group receiving the 826LA Gold Record. Not only that, but all of the students involved will receive UNRESTRICTED BRAGGING RIGHTS and an ICE CREAM PARTY! Feel free to pretend that your pledge will contribute directly to MORE ICE CREAM!
One of our goals here at Project Rhythm Seed is to ensure the future of music education programs in our schools. Efforts like the Chickens in Love project, fueled by the kind of creativity made possible only through the existence of such educational programs, make it clear how much can be accomplished when the right resources are available to encourage children to express themselves through the gift of music. It is our hope that such programs will continue to flourish, which will enable students around the world to foster their musical ability at an early age, showing not only what is possible in the future, but what is possible now.
