John Butler Trio LIVE at House of Blues, San Diego

    By: Myles Crawley

It’s a Thursday night here in Southern California as a drive down the coast to the House of Blues in San Diego. I’m listening to the John Butler Trio’s new album April Uprising, which I’ve had for a couple of months now, but haven’t really gotten into yet. The songs are good. I sense a blending of styles, everything from blues to Celtic to bluegrass to a Hendrix influence that undeniably cuts through. John Butler is most definitely a guitar guy, but he can sing too. The band is tight. All in all it’s a good record, but maybe not one of my faves, yet anyway.

Prepare For An “April Uprising” From The John Butler Trio

Multi-platinum Australian guitarist/songwriter John Butler returns with his first album in three years, April Uprising, on April 6, the follow-up to 2007’s critically acclaimed and globally successful release, Grand National. The album finds Butler with a new line-up and a new label in the States, ATO Records. The John Butler Trio delivers a sophisticated mix of guitar stylings, hip hop beats and intelligent, socially conscious lyrics on these 15 original tracks; the songs are rhythmically complex and melodically immediate, charged with new purpose but more committed than ever to the principles of classic songcraft.
