• will.i.am, Jennifer Lopez And Mick Jagger Together

I don’t know. Art is art. I’m cool with that. And I’m a firm believer in stretching the limits. Give me something that will make me think a little, or force me to get out of the box and look at it from another angle. Not all art is for everybody. I can dig that. It’s a subjective thing, and sometimes very personal for the believer.

Music is art too. I have pretty wide and varied tastes. There really isn’t a single genre of music that I could say I absolutely detest. Some I like more than others, but as long as I sense conviction and originality I can look past a lot. Where I start to draw the line is when it stops being art and starts becoming, well… shit. Case in point, this new track and video by will.i.am, j.lo (aka Jennifer Lopez) and ol.bro (aka Mick Jagger) called “T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)”. I don’t get the title, but that’s certainly not the worst of it.

The video shows will.i.am breaking through walls and avoiding giant cubes falling from the sky, while running and driving vehicles ranging from a Hummer to a space shuttle. This footage is intercut with Jennifer Lopez singing “you can go hard or you can go home” (WTF?!?) and slithering around in some blatant booty call dance. She looks good though. I’ve got to give her that.

But the topper is when will.i.am breaks through the earth’s atmosphere and goes ripping into space. And who should he run into but Mick Jagger. Sonofabitch! I didn’t see that one coming. Mick is performing his own trademark gyrations and now he’s the one singing j.lo’s line. At this point I’m not thinking about going hard, actually just the opposite. But to their credit I was thinking home – old people’s home. Sorry Mick. Find a rocker and make yourself comfy. And I think someone at Interscope should’ve had the balls to stand up to will.i.am and say “I don’t know Mr. am. Other than being a decent Christmas commercial for Beats by Dr. Dre, I think this track and this video are shit. No not THE SHIT, just SHIT.”

Too harsh? Okay. You watch it and tell me what you think.
