Mae – A Band For All Senses
American rock band, Mae, has released their first full-length album in ten years, Multisensory Aesthetic Experience today, via Tooth & Nail Records. The album was produced by lead vocalist Dave Elkins, and is available through all streaming services. Listen here.
The vision for this album was born in 2016 when Mae played the Forbes 30 Under 30 EMEA Summit at the Tower of David in Jerusalem. They concluded the evening with the first-ever large-scale live musical performance, sync’d to virtual reality. As Forbes described it, “Revelers dropped their mobile phones into specially-designed headsets that allowed them to view a brand-new animation meant to represent the creation of the universe while the band played in time.” Mae has also performed this “LIGHT” performance, as they call it, at the 72nd UN General Assembly and the Future of StoryTelling Festival.
Mae was born out of academic research into the relationship between color and sound. Inspired by Synesthesia (the phenomenon in which when one sense is stimulated, it leads to an automatic, involuntary stimulation of a second sense), the band wanted to create an experience for the whole body, connecting the fields of virtual reality, music, engineering, neuroscience, haptics, and animation. To accomplish this they collaborated with artist/animator David Lobser, violinist Tim Fain, and neuroscientist David Eagleman.
Mae is Dave Elkins, Zach Gehring and Jacob Marshall. Listen to this band and if you like what you hear buy their album and go and see them at a venue close to you. Their 2019 tour starts in Seattle on January 11.
